Big Changes Are Coming To Southwest Airlines Customers

Changes are afoot, or should we say, in the air at Southwest Airlines as the carrier says that it will largely do away with several mainstay features, including one of the most beloved staples in the airline industry: Two free bags for everyone. And that’s not all.

On Tuesday, March 11, the Dallas-based airline announced some sweeping changes to its operations, including a major shift to its famous baggage policy, a new economy fare and more.

Southwest Announces Major Changes: 5 Things To Know

The moves coincide with many changes that have taken place since hedge fund Elliott Investment Management acquired a stake in the company, albeit at the cost of some executive wrangling.

“These changes add to the initiatives already underway at Southwest, including the forthcoming implementation of assigned seating and extra legroom options,” the airline says in the announcement.

Here are some things to know about the big changes in store for Southwest passengers:

1. Southwest Ends 2-Free Bags Policy for Most

Southwest says its two-free bags policy is ending for its general passengers, but these select fares will still qualify for baggage perks:

Fares Baggage Policy
Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Members 2 free bags
Business Select® fares 2 free bags
A-List Members 1 free bag
Other select customers 1 free bag

“Customers who do not qualify for these free bag options will be charged for their first and second checked bags (weight and size limitations apply),” the airline says in the news release.

2. New Basic Fare

Southwest is introducing a new basic low fare, which is in line with the basic economy fares of major carriers like Delta Air Lines and United and American Airlines. Overall, money expert Clark Howard is not a fan of basic economy because of the many restrictions and fees.

To members of its loyalty program, Southwest shared in an email the new fare structure, which inexplicably omits the basic Wanna Get Away fares. While not specifically addressed, the chart below suggests that they could be phased out.

3. New Flight Credit Expiration Dates

Southwest’s current policy is that flight credits don’t expire, which was one of its top perks. It’s going away.

The airline’s new policy taking place this spring is flight credits will only last for one year or earlier from the date of ticketing, depending on the fare type.

4. Points Adjustments for Rapid Rewards Members

The carrier also announced that it is lowering the points-earning power of Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares, two of its most popular tickets. Meanwhile, Business Select fares will earn more points on qualifying flights, according to the carrier.

“Southwest Rapid Rewards, the carrier’s loyalty program, will also introduce variable redemption rates across higher-demand and lower-demand flights,” the carrier said.

5. When Will the Southwest Changes Take Effect?

Southwest says the major changes to its baggage policy, flight credit expirations and the launch of its basic fare will apply to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025.

Previously announced changes, like assigned seating and extra legroom options, will take place shortly after, the carrier has signaled.

Final Thoughts

Southwest is aiming to create more loyal customers and boost profits by streamlining its perks to those who pay the most to fly. The good news is that you can still save money on the carrier by employing some tested strategies:
